Anvil Cost Calculator FAQ
Where is the button?
In the top-right corner of the anvil screen, next to the Repair & Name title. If it is missing, check that enabled and showButton are true in config/anvilcostcalculator.json, then close and reopen the anvil. Still nothing? See troubleshooting.
Does the server need the mod?
No, and it would not do anything there anyway. The mod is client-side only: every player who wants the planner installs it (plus Mycel) on their own client. Joining a vanilla server with it installed works fine.
Why does the plan merge books before touching my item?
Because every trip through the anvil makes the next one more expensive, for the item and for books alike. Building one combined book and adding it in a single step usually beats adding books one by one, especially to an item that has been worked before. The planner tries the orders and simply shows whichever is cheapest.
What does "Too Expensive" mean?
A survival anvil refuses any single operation that costs 40 levels or more. The planner avoids such steps whenever an order exists, even if a slightly cheaper total would need one. If no order works, the total turns red and the offending steps are marked; in that case add fewer books, or start from an item with fewer earlier anvil uses. In creative mode the limit does not exist.
Why can't I add Smite to my sword?
It conflicts with an enchantment you already chose (here, Sharpness). Conflicting enchantments are greyed out and locked; hover the name to see what it clashes with. Remove the other one first if you really want to swap.
I have two Sharpness IV books. How do I plan with both?
Each row is one book. Two equal books merge into the next level (IV + IV = V), so set Book to V and keep in mind you will combine the two IV books first, which costs a few levels of its own.
My books have been through an anvil already. Is the plan still right?
The planner assumes fresh books with no earlier anvil uses, which is what villagers, enchanting tables and loot give you. A book you combined yourself carries extra cost, so the real price can be a little higher than shown.
Does it work with modded items and enchantments?
Yes, as long as they use the normal enchantment system. Items and enchantments are read from the game's registries when you open the planner, so modded ones appear automatically, with their own max levels, costs and conflicts.
Does it change anvil prices?
No. It only calculates. The anvil itself behaves exactly like vanilla.
Can I turn it off without uninstalling?
Yes. Set enabled to false in config/anvilcostcalculator.json and run /mycel reload anvilcostcalculator. The button and tooltip line disappear until you flip it back on.
