ItemHighlighter FAQ

How do I highlight something?

Hold the item in your main hand and type /hl #ff55aa. Hex (#ff55aa, &#ff55aa) and legacy codes (&a, §a) all work, and anything after the color is ignored, so /hl &a&lMy Axe simply highlights green. Bare /hl uses your defaultColor. No permissions needed: it is a client command.

Why did every item of that type light up?

That is the default: highlights match by item type, so every diamond sword highlights at once. If you only want your exact held item (say, the enchanted named one but not the plain ones), turn on matchComponents in config/itemhighlighter.json and highlight it again. Note that highlights made in one mode only match in that mode.

Does /hl rename my item?

No. /hl &a&lMy Axe does not name anything "My Axe"; it reads the leading &a as green and ignores the rest. The item keeps whatever name it had. Use an anvil (or a rename mod) to name items.

Why is there no highlight?

The usual suspects, in order: your hand is empty (hold the item first), the mod or its hotbarHighlight/showTooltipLine is disabled, or you highlighted in the other matching mode (see above). If none of those fit, see troubleshooting.

Do other players see my highlights?

No. Highlights are client side and per player. Nobody else sees yours, and servers need nothing installed — though you still install the mod locally to see your own.

Why does the world outline look like a different color?

Dropped items and item frames use vanilla's glowing outline, which only supports the 16 palette colors, so the mod picks the nearest one. Your exact color still shows on the item texture, in the tooltip, and in /hl list.

Where are my highlights stored?

In config/itemhighlighter_data.json, up to 256 items with the oldest dropped first. It is per-player client data: back it up if you care about it, and do not ship it in modpacks.

Can I turn it off without uninstalling?

Yes. Set enabled to false in config/itemhighlighter.json and run /mycel reload itemhighlighter. Your highlight list is kept, so flipping it back restores everything.
