Better Librarians configuration
The file
After the first launch with the mod installed, you will find config/betterlibrarians.json next to your other configs (in .minecraft/config for the default launcher). It looks like this:
{
"enabled": true,
"showLevel": true,
"highlightMaxLevel": true,
"maxBooks": 6,
"showUncataloguedHint": true
}
Settings
| Key | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
enabled |
true |
Master switch. Set it to false and the title card and renames disappear (original nameplates are restored) until you flip it back. |
showLevel |
true |
Append the enchantment level to each book (Sharpness V vs plain Sharpness). |
highlightMaxLevel |
true |
Draw max-level books in gold and lower levels in white. Turn it off and every book renders white. |
maxBooks |
6 |
Maximum books listed on the card, from 1 to 12. Extra books collapse into an …and N more line. |
showUncataloguedHint |
true |
Show a Trade once to catalogue books hint for villagers whose books are still unknown. Turn it off and uncatalogued villagers show no card at all. |
The data file
Catalogues and renames live in config/betterlibrarians_data.json, next to the config file. You do not need to edit it by hand: it is rewritten automatically whenever you catalogue a villager or use /vname. If you ever want a clean slate, delete it (with the game closed) and every villager becomes uncatalogued and unnamed again. At most 256 villagers are kept.
Changing settings
You have three options, pick whichever is closest:
- Edit the file with the game closed, then start the game. Simple and foolproof.
- Edit the file and reload live with
/mycel reload betterlibrariansin game. No restart needed. See commands. - Use the config screen from the mod list (Forge and NeoForge). Same five settings, with reset buttons.
Broken file?
If the JSON gets mangled (bad edit, crash mid-save), the mod logs a warning and falls back to defaults rather than crashing. Delete the file and restart to get a fresh one. A mangled data file behaves the same way: the mod starts with an empty catalogue instead of crashing.
