Better Pets configuration

Nine settings, all on the server.

The file

After the first start with the mod installed, you will find config/betterpets.json in the server's config folder (in singleplayer: .minecraft/config). It looks like this:

{
  "enabled": true,
  "protectFromOwner": true,
  "strongLeads": true,
  "deathAlerts": true,
  "allowCall": true,
  "callCooldownSeconds": 30,
  "allowRename": true,
  "allowGive": true,
  "findSeconds": 30
}

Settings

KeyDefaultWhat it does
enabled true Master switch. Off means no tracking, no protection, and /pets only says the mod is off.
protectFromOwner true Owners cannot hurt their own pets, unless they sneak while attacking.
strongLeads true A pet on its owner's lead is pulled along instead of the lead snapping.
deathAlerts true Tell the owner where a pet died. The pet is marked dead in the list either way.
allowCall true Allow /pets call. Turn it off on servers where teleporting pets feels like cheating.
callCooldownSeconds 30 Seconds between two calls per player, 0 to 3600.
allowRename true Allow /pets name. Off means name tags only.
allowGive true Allow /pets give.
findSeconds 30 How long /pets find makes the pet glow and shows the arrow, 5 to 300.

Changing settings

You have four options, pick whichever is closest:

  1. Edit the file with the server stopped, then start it. Simple and foolproof.
  2. Edit the file and reload live with /mycel reload betterpets. No restart needed. See commands.
  3. Change it live with a command, e.g. /mycel set betterpets callCooldownSeconds 120 (needs operator permission; /mycel get betterpets shows every value). No file editing needed.
  4. Use the config screen from the mod list (Forge and NeoForge, singleplayer). Same nine settings, with reset buttons.

Broken file?

If the JSON gets mangled (bad edit, crash mid-save), the mod logs a warning and falls back to defaults rather than crashing. Delete the file and restart to get a fresh one. The same goes for the pet list in <world>/data/betterpets.json: if it cannot be read, the list starts empty and fills up again as pets are seen.
